Are you passionate about understanding behaviour, non-verbal communication, and child development?

Are you looking to build frontline experience that will prepare you for a career in psychology, speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, art therapy, or educational psychology?

We are recruiting a Learning Support Assistant for a specialist SEN school in Slough supporting non-verbal children with complex needs. This role offers valuable, hands-on experience working alongside Occupational Therapists (OTs), Speech and Language Therapists (SALTs), and Art Therapists in a dedicated SEN setting.

Many pupils in this school are non-verbal and require alternative communication strategies, sensory support, and therapeutic interventions to engage with learning and build emotional regulation. Your role will be to provide consistent support, structure, and trust, helping them access education and develop communication skills in a way that works for them.

Why this role is ideal for an Aspiring Psychologist

Working as a Learning Support Assistant in a non-verbal SEN setting is exceptional practical experience and strong preparation for future roles within psychology, therapy, and mental health.

You will work directly alongside:

  • Speech and Language Therapists (SALTs) – supporting communication strategies, AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication), and language development
  • Occupational Therapists (OTs) – supporting sensory integration, fine motor skills, and daily living activities
  • Art Therapists – using creative expression to support emotional regulation and non-verbal communication

This gives you rare, frontline exposure to a multidisciplinary therapeutic team – ideal for anyone considering a career in clinical psychology, educational psychology, speech therapy, occupational therapy, or art therapy.

You will develop:

  • Understanding of non-verbal communication methods (PECS, Makaton, body language, AAC devices)
  • Skills in sensory and emotional regulation
  • Knowledge of autism, SEMH, and complex needs
  • Confidence working alongside specialist therapists
  • The ability to build trust and rapport with non-verbal children

Your Core Purpose

Your goal is to:

  • Help non-verbal children communicate and regulate their emotions
  • Support access to therapy-led interventions (SALT, OT, Art Therapy)
  • Raise attainment through tailored, sensory-friendly approaches
  • Provide a safe, predictable, and supportive environment
  • Encourage confidence, resilience, and emotional growth
  • Reinforce that every child can communicate – in their own way

By building positive relationships, you help students understand that being non-verbal does not define their potential.

What You Will Be Doing

  • Supporting non-verbal pupils on a 1:1 or small-group basis
  • Working alongside SALTs, OTs, and Art Therapists to deliver therapeutic activities
  • Using AAC, PECS, Makaton, or visual supports to aid communication
  • Helping students manage sensory overload and emotional triggers
  • Supporting engagement in lessons and therapy sessions
  • Using calm, consistent approaches to regulate behaviour
  • Encouraging independence, routine, and confidence
  • Acting as a positive role model for emotional regulation and resilience

We Would Love to Hear From You If You Have:

  • A degree in Psychology (or a related field such as Speech Therapy, OT, or Art Therapy)
  • A strong interest in non-verbal communication, autism, or child development
  • Emotional resilience and a calm, patient approach
  • The ability to build rapport without relying on spoken language
  • A genuine desire to support non-verbal children and their families
  • An interest in pursuing a career in psychology, SALT, OT, art therapy, or SEN education

You do not need direct school experience – your empathy, consistency, and motivation to support young people are what matter most. Full training is provided, including introduction to PECS, Makaton, and sensory regulation strategies.
