The Role: As a HLTA, you will play a crucial role in supporting the diverse needs of their students, ensuring that every individual receives the guidance and assistance they require to excel academically and personally.

Your responsibilities will include:

Providing one-on-one support to students with learning difficulties or disabilities, adapting teaching materials and strategies to suit their unique learning styles.
Assisting teachers in delivering differentiated instruction and implementing individualised education plans (IEPs) effectively.
Collaborating with the Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO) and other members of the support team to develop and implement interventions that promote student progress and well-being.
Creating a nurturing and inclusive learning environment where all students feel valued, respected, and supported in reaching their goals.
Monitoring and assessing student progress, providing constructive feedback, and documenting observations to inform future planning and interventions.

Candidates should have practical experience working directly with individuals with special educational needs or disabilities, demonstrating a deep understanding of various learning styles and the ability to tailor support strategies accordingly. Additionally, candidates should showcase their ability to collaborate effectively with educators, support staff, and external specialists to develop and implement personalised education plans. Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, are essential for conveying complex information clearly and compassionately to students, parents, and colleagues alike.

Qualifications and Skills that would be beneficial for the role:

A degree or certification in Special Education, Education, Psychology, or a related field.
Practical experience working with students with specific learning disabilities (e.g., dyslexia, dyscalculia, ADHD) or developmental disorders (e.g., autism spectrum disorder).
Familiarity with Individualised Education Plans (IEPs) and experience in implementing accommodations and modifications to support students’ academic and social-emotional needs.
Training or certification in behaviour management techniques and de-escalation strategies.
Proficiency in using assistive technology and specialised educational software to facilitate learning for students with diverse needs.
Knowledge of relevant legislation and policies related to special education, such as the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) or the Education Act (SEN) in the UK.
Experience working in a multi-disciplinary team environment, collaborating with teachers, therapists, and parents to develop and implement comprehensive support plans.
Training in safeguarding and child protection procedures, with a clear understanding of your role in ensuring the safety and well-being of students.
Fluency in additional languages or proficiency in British Sign Language (BSL) may be advantageous for supporting students with communication difficulties.
Certification in First Aid and CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation), with a focus on addressing the unique needs of students with disabilities or medical conditions.
Membership in relevant professional organisations, such as the British Association of Special Education (BASE) or the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC), demonstrating a commitment to ongoing professional development and best practices in special education.
