The Role – Secondary Teaching Assistant

As a Teaching Assistant, you’ll work alongside teachers and pastoral staff to provide tailored classroom support for students who need additional guidance. You’ll play a key role in helping pupils engage with learning, develop positive relationships, and reach both their academic and personal goals.

Teaching Assistant Responsibilities

  • Provide one-to-one and small group support across a range of subjects.
  • Support students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), including Autism (ASC), ADHD, SEMH, and learning difficulties.
  • Assist teachers in delivering engaging and inclusive lessons.
  • Encourage positive behaviour, classroom engagement, and participation.
  • Help students develop confidence, independence, resilience, and social skills.
  • Work collaboratively with teaching staff, SENCOs, and pastoral teams to implement individual support strategies.
  • Support pupils both inside and outside the classroom when required.
  • Build positive relationships that enable students to thrive academically and emotionally.

What We’re Looking For

  • Experience working with young people in education, schools, childcare, coaching, youth work, care, or similar settings.
  • Previous experience as a Teaching Assistant, Learning Support Assistant, Classroom Assistant, or SEND Support Worker is desirable but not essential.
  • A patient, caring, and resilient approach.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Confidence supporting students with additional learning or behavioural needs.
  • A genuine passion for education and helping young people succeed.
  • Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to obtain one).

  • Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC)
  • ADHD
  • SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health Needs)
  • Moderate Learning Difficulties (MLD)
  • Speech and Language Needs
  • Behaviour Support Strategies
  • SEND in mainstream secondary schools
