Bullying in schools can be devastating – especially for LGBTQ+ pupils.

Although there has been progress in recent years, many LGBTQ+ individuals still face discrimination, harassment, and bullying in the classroom.

To help you create inclusive and supportive environments where all students feel safe and accepted, we’ll explore the importance of addressing LGBTQ+ bullying in schools and discuss how hiring a school speaker can play a vital role in educating students and fostering a culture of acceptance.

Understanding LGBTQ+ Bullying

LGBTQ+ bullying is the targeted harassment, discrimination, or violence directed towards individuals who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer/questioning.

This type of bullying can take various forms, including verbal abuse, physical violence, exclusion, and online harassment.

LGBTQ+ students are disproportionately affected by bullying, with studies showing higher rates of depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation among this demographic.

Victims of LGBTQ+ bullying may experience feelings of shame, isolation, and self-hatred, leading to poor performance at school, social withdrawal, and mental health issues. They may also be reluctant to seek help due to fear of further discrimination or retaliation.

The good news is that there are things you can do to make a positive change in your school!

The Impact of LGBTQ+ Bullying

To address LGBTQ+ bullying effectively, you’ll need to use a varied approach that includes education, advocacy, and support.

Not sure where to start? Our school speakers can help.

The Role of School Speakers

Bringing in a school speaker to address LGBTQ+ bullying can be a powerful tool for raising awareness, promoting empathy, and tackling harmful stereotypes and attitudes.

A skilled speaker can engage students in meaningful conversations about diversity, inclusion, and respect, helping to create a safer and more supportive school environment for LGBTQ+ students. And, through Make Life Kind, we can offer you inspiring, relatable LGBTQ+ school speakers to support your school…

Make Life Kind is a community-based charity that provides school speakers (AKA Milkfluencers) with inspiring stories to deliver talks on topics including LGBTQ+ inclusion, transgender awareness, allyship, anti-bullying, diversity and inclusion, and the importance of tolerance.

By sharing their personal experiences and insights, school speakers can foster understanding and empathy among students and staff alike.

Educating Students and Staff

In addition to addressing LGBTQ+ bullying among students, it’s essential to provide training and support for school staff.

Educators play a critical role in creating a culture of acceptance and support, so they’ll need the knowledge and skills to tackle incidents of bullying and discrimination.

Our Make Life Kind school speakers can deliver training sessions for staff, providing valuable insights and strategies for creating inclusive classrooms and supporting LGBTQ+ students. By working together to create a culture of acceptance and support, we can ensure that all students feel valued, respected, and empowered to thrive.
