Milk Education

Behaviour Support Assistant

Behaviour Support Assistant – Secondary School

Location: Dunston, Gateshead
Hours: 37 hours per week, term-time only
Department: Pastoral Support

About the Role

Milk Education is recruiting a dedicated and resilient Behaviour Support Worker to join the pastoral team at a lovely school in Gateshead.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone passionate about supporting young people, promoting positive behaviour and helping students overcome challenges to reach their full potential.

Working predominantly within the school’s Referral Room, you will support students whose behaviour has fallen below the school’s expectations, helping them reflect on their actions, take responsibility and successfully return to their normal lessons and routines.

You will play a key role in promoting a positive school environment, building respectful relationships with students and supporting the school’s restorative approach to behaviour management.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise students placed in the Referral Room and provide a structured, supportive environment.

  • Use restorative practice techniques to help students understand the impact of their behaviour and make positive changes.

  • Deliver behaviour support programmes to help students reintegrate into their regular lessons.

  • Assess students’ individual needs and determine when they are ready to return to the classroom or require further support.

  • Build positive, professional relationships with students, encouraging respect, resilience and personal responsibility.

  • Work closely with teachers, teaching assistants, the SEND department and the wider pastoral team.

  • Communicate effectively with parents, carers and external agencies where appropriate.

  • Maintain accurate pastoral records and contribute to meetings, monitoring and evaluation.

  • Support the consistent implementation of the school’s behaviour policy and safeguarding procedures.

The Ideal Candidate

We are looking for someone who:

  • Has experience using positive behaviour management strategies.

  • Can remain calm, patient and professional when managing challenging behaviour.

  • Has excellent communication and relationship-building skills.

  • Is emotionally resilient, adaptable and confident working in a busy secondary school environment.

  • Can establish clear boundaries while maintaining a supportive and inclusive approach.

  • Has strong organisational, IT and administrative skills.

  • Works effectively as part of a team and is committed to improving outcomes for young people.

  • Has an up-to-date understanding of safeguarding and child protection.

Experience working with children or young adults, particularly within a school or pastoral setting, would be desirable. Knowledge of restorative practice and school pastoral systems would also be advantageous.
